But Then The Tide Comes In

This Sunday, I’m thinking about beliefs.

Maybe it’s that tomorrow is my birthday. As I add another year to the running count I become a bit retrospective, wanting to pause for a moment and consider what has gone before.

Decades ago, while sitting in a restaurant, I made some observations about some of my most basic beliefs. I wanted to share a bit of that with you today. I hope you’ll enjoy.

But Then The Tide Comes In

I believe in those mountains
rising above my horizon
just there, to the west.
I believe the air circulating those peaks
to be crisp, clean, almost painful to inhale,
that to cross those peaks
is an awesome task
and one I must accomplish.

I believe that whoever you are
with this napkin to your lips,
you have a word or two to say
and will find your time to make it heard,
to make your voice stand out
in the midst of all mankind,
to scratch your name in sand
as we all do, in our time.
jon

I am Jon, still scratchin’.
